Governors

WELCOME TO OUR WEBPAGE!

The Governing Body is made up of a range of people from many different backgrounds. They include Parents, staff, Co-opted Governors and  Local Authority (L.A.) Governors.

All Governors are volunteers who give their time and skills to help in the running of the school by acting as a critical or questioning friend.

The L.A. provides training sessions to induct new Governors and to provide up to date trainings on topics relevant to Governors roles in the running of the school.

 WHAT WE DO

We are a ‘critical friend’ to the Headteacher and wider operational leadership team, providing both support and constructive challenge. Governors have three crucial roles:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding leaders to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

Each Governor has a responsibility for a particular aspect of school life and reports back to the Full Governing Body (FGB) . This ensures that Governors are kept up to date with the relevant requirements of OFSTED.

The  Full Governing Body meets 6 times a year.

As well as attending meetings, Governors like to visit the school and be involved in school life. This includes reading with the children, pupil voice and making over 200 pieces of toast for the Harvest breakfast!  We also enjoy sharing in assemblies, plays and other activities.

Above all, we aim to support the staff of the school in creating a safe, happy and pleasant environment in which to 'achieve our best together'.

GOVERNOR BIOS:

Carl Hornsby- Head Teacher

I am proud to be the Headteacher of our school, a role I feel comes with day to day excitement, challenge and immense job satisfaction. Since Infant school I have wanted to be a teacher, and have taught in year groups 1 to 6, before becoming a deputy head in two schools and then progressing to head at Whitchurch. I enjoy all aspects and elements of the role, but my proudest is the extended curriculum offer in which all children take part in forest school, gym, climbing... the list goes on. In my spare time I enjoy mountain biking and general family life!

Jo Smith- Vice Chair

Hi, My name is Jo Smith and I joined the governing body in Spring 2023.  I welcome the opportunity to be a part of the school in the role of vice chair, pupil premium and disadvantaged pupils governor.  You might also see me around the school as part of the visiting ‘Open the Book’ assembly team or hearing children read.

Before joining the Whitchurch Primary School team as a co-opted governor, I taught in primary schools in Marlborough, Bristol, Backwell and was Deputy Head at Flax Bourton.  I now work as a private tutor.  When I’m not teaching, I love to spend time with family and friends (both here and in beautiful Cornwall), be at church, play and teach the piano and go for a run: well maybe just a jog!

Abigail Fudge - Teacher Governor

I am the current Year 2 Teacher at Whitchurch Primary School. I have been teaching here since starting my teaching career 6 years ago! I also hold the roles of PE lead and Computing co-ordinator too. Since starting at Whitchurch, I have taught within Key Stage One, through single year groups, as well as mixed-year groups. It is so rewarding to work with the younger children in school and I love seeing how they progress during their first few years with us at Whitchurch. Outside of school I enjoy reading and watching musical theatre!

Giuliano Carloni- Parent Governor

I am Giuliano, I have lived in Whitchurch, Bristol for 5 years and have a son who has been attending Whitchurch Primary School since Year 1. I volunteered to become a governor because I felt that with my environmental background as an oceanographer and HES in the offshore oil and gas industry, I have relevant skills that can support the school and keep our children safe.

Whitchurch Primary School is a wonderful and supportive school, and I am delighted to be able to continue to be part of the school community in my role as governor with a particular interest in learning more and sharing knowledge. …

Whitchurch Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
