Phonics and Early Maths
Phonics
Children make a strong start to their reading journey by beginning phonics within the first few weeks of Reception. We teach phonics using 'Unlocking Letters and Sounds' to support our planning and teaching.

Common Exception Words
Common exception words (also known as tricky words) are words that cannot be sounded out; they do not fit the phonic sound rules so we must learn them by sight!

Early Maths
In Reception, we teach maths using 'Mastering Number' as our programme for planning and teaching. Children take part in carpet activities and weekly guided group sessions to provide them with the key skills needed to become a mathematician. We also use White Rose Maths to support our planning and teaching of shape, space and measure skills.
